A counting book in rhyme describing the picturesque sights found on an island beach, from one white sail and two orange houses to nine steel drums and ten sleeping boats

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Numbers one to ten are thematically tied together by light-filled views of the Carribean. One white sail under a bright orange sun leads finally to ten boats riding at anchor under a full moon. Along the journey children are treated to sparkling white beaches, pink clouds, ``five blue doors in the baking hot sun''; ``six wooden windows let the cool wind run.'' Rhyming text in clean round sans-serif print on large white space faces page-filling watercolor paintings. The pictures, in brilliant primary colors, show a mixture of influences: the Bauhaus tradition of clean, uncluttered lines combined with the primitive feeling of Gauguin's islanders. A straightforward presentation of numerals without novelties (such as counting down or any particular sequence in objects chosen for depiction), this is nevertheless a lovely introduction to another culture as well as a sense-pleasing aesthetic experience. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

Set against brilliant white pages, dazzling watercolors leap to meet the eye in this colorful addition to the lengthy roster of counting books. The Caribbean flavor shimmers throughout--from the "baking hot sun" to the "pale island moon"; from "nine steel drums singing a soft sweet tune" to the rhythm of the spare but carefully worded text. Solid swathes of bright hues invite thoughts of summer and festivals. Each page is a still life--an island scene captured and held, yet brimming over with inner vitality. The objects to be counted are familiar--girls, boys, houses, windows--but the exotic setting adds an air of excitement and depth. Questions will surely arise--why do the girls carry bread on their heads? how are the steel drums played?--thus giving this work an added dimension. This joyous collaboration seems to swing to its own tune as it draws the reader back to the glowing artwork. Ages 2-4.
