A California insurance claims investigator, Moz Brant, seeks a fat reward for uncovering a traffic accident scam, but she becomes endangered herself when an accident victim is murdered

A scam involving claims for false injuries in automobile accidents enmeshes Orange County, Calif., insurance investigator Moz Brant (first met in Hush, Money ) in murder, and in the process she almost becomes a victim herself. Seeking to collect a large reward offered for evidence concerning organized fraudulent claims, Moz suspects waitress LaDonna Treece has faked her back injuries and, moreover, is part of a ring. The woman seems inclined to talk to Moz, but before she does, apparently commits suicide. Moz suspects murder, although she can't convince the police. She follows various leads to a jolly, musical but kinky doctor; his chic bookkeeper; a physical therapist; and a well-to-do lawyer. When an attempt is made on her life, Moz feels she is closing in on her goal, but further mayhem and danger ensue before she cracks the case. Femling has a good eye for the Southern California lifestyle--gritty, greedy and stylish--but the characters, even the detective who struggles with boyfriend and AA, don't inspire much interest or sympathy.

Less hard-edged than in her debut, Hush, Money (1989), California claims-investigator Moz Brant now wonders whether a reported traffic accident is really a scam: one passenger is conveniently missing; another uses a back-brace only when someone's watching; and two others, including a doctor, are clearly colluding in their lies. Then LaDonna Treece, sans back-brace, suspiciously OD's; Paulette, the bookkeeper at her doctor's office, suddenly disappears (with several computer disks); and Moz is almost killed when a cowboy-hatted thug forces her off the road. What began as a simple accident claim, then, becomes a matter of murder--undertaken to protect an insurance rip-off partnership, as well as to subsidize a porno-art collection. Testy, pugnacious Moz is more interesting than her assignment, but, still, Femling's driving style and unsentimental viewpoint make this an above-average read. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP.
