Mary C. Ryan is the author of seven middle grade novels, as well as articles, features, and stories for a variety of childrens and adult magazines and newspapers. She currently resides near Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband, Pat. She enjoys adventure travel to such places as Belize, in Central America; Baja, Mexico, and under the sea in a nuclear submarine.
Grade 5-8-- Twelve-year-old Wilf, planning to pull up his science grade by raising brine shrimp from dried eggs, accidentally clones himself when the experiment goes awry. Swearing his best friend to secrecy, he manages to keep the duplicate hidden in his bedroom and inevitably decides to cash in on the incident by substituting it for himself in various unpleasant situations, such as school and a date with the dreaded Heather Spears-Croxton. His attempts to explain disappearing food and peculiar behavior to his parents, and his herculean efforts to train the clone so it will fit in at school, provide mild humor. Wilf's character is developed to the point that he is upset when everyone seems to like the clone better than him but decides to stand by it when its life is threatened. The science here is questionable, and the story's pace picks up at the expense of plausibility with the entrance of the desperate scientists who are the cause of the trouble. Nonetheless, the book is entertaining. It's less serious and for a younger audience than William Sleator's The Duplicate (Dutton, 1988). --Lyle Blake Smythers, Library of Congress, Washington, DC
