While caring for over 300 teenage foster children during a 12-year period, therapist Levine discovered that the "Pollyanish" parenting books she consulted prescribed ineffective counseling. Through trial and error, she developed her own methods of responding to and changing unacceptable behavior. Here, she provides numerous examples and case studies illustrating how to cope with problems such as lying, breaking the law, using drugs, and seeking thrills. Her approach involves caring, confronting, and negotiating a change. Levine calls for more tolerance than many parents may be willing to accord, and makes little mention of strong family values. Nevertheless, her guide is suitable for larger parenting collections.
