Preserving the West is an attractive, sharply illustrated work, the first in a promised series on preservation of historic sites in the various regions of the United States. Its 24 photo-essays are both sensitive and realistic. The book is most valuable for its thorough background of each preservation case. Delahanty always recounts the history of each site or district, but often he does not examine the practical factors of a given preservation undertaking. The text also shies away from a survey of preservation legislation in the West in favor of an overview of federal rulings whose applications to specific situations in the Western states are not fully explained. This a fine catalog of preservation-worthy sites, but some readers will yearn for the who, when, and how. Sally R. Sims, Ohio State Univ. Libs., Columbus
