Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Leo McKern, though short of stature, was a lion of an actor. On this showing he was a superb writer too, with an easy, articulate style, and a keen sense of wit and irony. Written in 1983, nearly twenty years before he died aged 82, it's a rare treat, one of the best actor's autobiographies I've read. In mostly short chapters ~ interspersed with a few of his own rather good poems ~ he tells us about his experiences at the RSC, playing Peer Gynt {how I wish I'd seen that!}, Iago, Big Daddy, and of course the immortal Rumpole, as well as his baddie in the Beatles film Help! He has nothing but praise for the Fab Four, and got to know George a little. {Incidentally, Eleanor Bron, the female lead in the film, would later play the culprit in an episode of Rumpole of the Bailey.} He also waxes philosophical at times, though never pompously or idly, making his points swiftly and well. You get the impression he was a man who wouldn't suffer fools too easily, while being someone of great compassion and a certain stoical cynicism about humanity, not to mention a wonderful actor. He had what sounds like a loving marriage with his wife Jane for many decades, and they had two daughters, Abigail following her dad into the acting profession. He is poignant about his Australian parents {he was of course born in Sydney} and generally generous about his fellow actors, though one or two critics come in for a lambasting. A late chapter on Olivier's TV King Lear is moving, since the great man was close to death, so the extensive filming had to be scheduled to accommodate the old, now-forgetful giant. McKern, who played Gloucester, is clear-eyed and compassionate, as he so often is in this most absorbing, articulate, and unegotistical of theatrical memoirs. Seller Inventory # 0462
