Frank G. Novak Jr. is Professor of English at Pepperdine University, California. He has published widely on the life and work of Lewis Mumford.
This book is a brilliant introduction to two of the most original minds of the past century. The collection is beautifully organized, with a crisply written, observant introduction to the main sections; and the conversation between Geddes and Mumford is full of light, heat and cultural significance. It is an original and important work, indispensible to scholars, and as engaging to read as a first rate novel.
–Donald L. Miller, Lafayette College
. . . inspirational . . . just the thing for a foggy Sunday morning when the paper leaves you feeling slightly undernourished.
–San Francisco Bay Guardian
. . . an intriguing, informative narration of the times and ideas of the older master and the man who signed himself `yours in discipleship'.
–The Nation
. . . it manages, slowly and firmly . . . to record a remarkable relationship in American intellectual history. . . . in the best letters in this volume ideas break through, and you can clearly sense the thrill.
–The New York Times Book Review
. . . the story is a universal one: a mating dance, full of joy and sadness, progressing over the course of 17 years from infatutation to connection to disillusionment. That the romance was an intellectual one, driven not by eros but by the desire for mental stimulus and career advancement, matters not at all. These were two heterosexual men who wanted as much out of each other as lovers do, and in some ways forged a bond every bit as tight. The connection between Geddes, teacher, and Mumford, acolyte, is one of the great master-protege relationships in modern cultural history, ranking with that of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright; its long evolution sheds light on every anguished exchange between a pupil who has worshiped his teacher and then been disappointed by him.
