PreS --A polar bear and a mole are the protagonists in this wordless book. Out for a walk, they are suddenly confronted by a menacing swirl of blue creeping up behind them. In a panic, they try to push, then blow away the cloud--all to no avail. Then the bear notices a tiny white light within the blueness that the animals enlarge to form a bright circle that lights up their darkness. The virtually featureless background focuses attention on the friends. Wouters's crayon double-page illustrations, executed primarily in cool blues, white, and gray, are playful and convey a sense of movement and action. She is less successful in making clear exactly what the two are running from and what the light is that they create. Overall a pretty book, intended to allay night fears, but it's too obscure for the intended audience. --Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI
