Salvador's psyched. There's a field trip!
Away from school.
Away from family.
Staying in a hotel with a bunch of kids and only two chaperones.
It's supposed to be an academic trip.
But not if Salvador can help it!

Salvador
I couldn't stop thinking about this Sacramento trip, and how it would just be me and Elizabeth. I've always liked her. A lot. And I'm pretty sure she's always felt the same way about me. We even kissed a couple of times. But then Anna freaked out when she found out about us kissing, so Elizabeth and I agreed to be just friends. Anna and I have been best friends forever, so I guess she felt pretty left out.
I glanced over at Anna and Brian just as Anna burst out laughing at something Brian said.
Anna's totally over that now, I thought. The three of us had been getting along fine, and we were all just friends.
But once you start liking someone, you can't just stop. A weekend alone with Elizabeth, without Anna around, could change everything.
Elizabeth
I'd kind of looked forward to some quality time with Salvador, away from our everyday lives. I guess I forgot about the other people on our team, I thought, doing my best to nod and smile at the right times so Ronald wouldn't realize I wasn't paying attention.
At least Salvador and I would be sitting together on the bus. And it was a long drive up to Sacramento--we would have plenty of time to talk.
"Hi, guys!" Bethel McCoy called, interrupting Ronald's explanation of the construction of the capitol rotunda.
Turning, I saw Bethel jog up the sidewalk. Even in her baggy jeans and sweatshirt she still looked really graceful and athletic when she ran.
"Hi, Bethel," I greeted her. Jessica's good friends with Bethel, but I don't talk to her that much. She just seems so, I don't know, intense.
"Am I the last one here?" Bethel asked, shrugging off her oversized leather backpack and then running one hand over her hair.
Ronald shook his head. "No," he said. "Richard isn't here yet."
"Yes, he is," a voice resounded from across the street.
Glancing up, I saw Richard Griggs loping toward us. All I knew about Richard was that he was Bethel's locker partner. Jessica had informed me that he'd be the one "cool" guy on the trip. Watching him approach, I couldn't help noticing that he was really good-looking. He has wavy, brown hair and intense green eyes. When he said hello and flashed a lopsided, cocky grin, I saw that his teeth were perfectly straight except for one on the bottom that was just a tiny bit crooked. It made his face seem even better looking somehow.
"Glad you could finally make it, Griggs," Bethel said.
Richard chuckled. "Yeah, right, McCoy," he responded. "I saw you booking down the street right in front of me."
"It's a good thing we're all here on time," Ronald said. "We have a long ride in front of us. I checked on the Internet, and according to my calculations it will take us slightly over six hours to travel to Sacramento."
"Does that allow for traffic developments?" Salvador asked, his face in a mock-serious expression. I stifled a giggle. Salvador can always make me laugh.
"So where are the chaperons?" Bethel asked, glancing at her watch. "We're supposed to leave soon."
"Maybe they decided not to come," Salvador suggested. He pumped his fist in the air. "Par-tay!"
Ronald shook his head. "No," he said sternly. "Ms. Upton and Mr. Martinez are definitely coming. It was on the permission slip."
"Anyway, this weekend isn't about partying," Bethel told Salvador with a little frown. "We're going up there to try to win this competition for our school. Remember?"
"Ooookay," Salvador said, holding up both hands. "Whatever."
He rolled his eyes at me behind Bethel's back. I shrugged in return. It wasn't like I totally disagreed with Bethel--I mean, the academic competition was the whole reason behind this trip, and we all wanted to win. Of course, that didn't mean we weren't allowed to have any fun at the same time....
Just then I heard the sound of grinding gears and turned to see a big, silver bus taking the turn into the school parking lot. It drove over to the curb and stopped in front of us. Through the large, tinted windows I could see kids our age looking out at us.
"Check out our ride," Salvador said, letting out a low whistle. "So this is how the smart half lives?"
I sighed and gave him a light punch on the shoulder. I hate how he's always so down on himself. You'd think after getting the top score on the science test, he'd finally take himself more seriously.
That's silly, I reminded myself. Salvador doesn't take anything seriously. It's why I like him so much--he keeps me from being too serious.
"Who are all those other people?" Salvador asked, staring up at the bus.
"Didn't you read the schedule they gave us?" I asked.
Salvador grinned. "Um, not exactly," he said. "I made it into a paper airplane on my way home. It flew pretty far too."
I couldn't help laughing. Typical Salvador.
