Grade 7-12 This is not one of Colman's better books. Sixteen-year-old Emily lives in an exclusive neighborhood and has led a sheltered life. She is a passenger in her boyfriend's car when he hits and kills a child for whom she had been a favorite babysitter. The primary weakness in the novel is that the focus is too broad. Colman attempts to address a myriad of problems suffered by numerous people, many of them having no relation whatsoever to the tragedy. This results in a superficial treatment of all of the problems, and readers will be neither enlightened nor entertained. There is too little emphasis on the effects of the tragedy on the main charactersEmily and her boyfriend. A much better book on a similar subject by the same author is Accident (Morrow, 1980), in which a girl is paralyzed as a result of an accident involving her boyfriend's motorcycle. Nancy P.
