Ages 2^-5. Ziefert's simple story about a playful cat who loses her way home provides a nice alternative to board books for the youngest library patrons. Wee G.'s day is narrated in short, simple sentences of large black type that runs along the bottom of each double-page spread. Children will find Wee G.'s activities familiar: "She jumps out of bed, takes a quick drink of milk and runs out to play." When a butterfly happens by, Wee G. chases after it begging, "Please play with me!" and then finds herself lost in the nearby woods. The story ends well for Wee G., but not before she elicits considerable empathy from listeners, who, it is hoped, will learn from her careless mistake. First-time illustrator Saaf makes an admirable debut, capturing Wee G.'s sweet innocence with childlike gouache paintings. Lauren Peterson
