March 1948, I had my sixth birthday. Three days later my father died. I was living with my mother in a small prairie town in South Dakota. Mom, at age 52, had no occupation and no money. The bank had already taken the family farm. After the school year ended, we moved west where jobs were more plentiful. Thus began a wonderful life of adventure and learning for me. I lived in mountains, on the seashore, in desolate plains and on an Indian Reservation. I attended many different schools and met many kinds of people which shaped me to love and appreciate people different from myself. With my mother’s encouragement, I moved through school, college, and medical school. I got a job where I could care for people from different places; inner city, rural, the amazon and especially the Dominican Republic. I tried to recognize and respect their humanity and dignity. I knew the joy of working with friends and felt the special energy that comes from teaching eager students at a fine university. Since my first communion my faith journey has had its highs and lows. Mostly, it has humbled and strengthened me, enriched my life and pushed me to be a better person. Lucky Boy is a story of my growing up, my education and my life. It is an encouraging story of success, failure, idealism and disappointment. Eventually, it becomes a love story between mother and child, friends and family, kids, grandchildren and husband and wife.
