Originally compiled in the 1950s and early 1960s, the Wainwright walking guides are perhaps the most distinctive and unusual such guides ever devised. The result of painstaking and lengthy research by their namesake and author over a period of thirteen years, the guides have retained their original format and design to this day. The books contain intricate hand drawn sketches by the author, detailing routes of ascent, and gradients of the hills in and around the Lake District and outlying regions. The seven guides covering the Fells district, as well as the Outlying Fells of Lakeland will be reissued by Frances Lincoln in April.

Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in 1941 Wainwright devoted every spare minute of his days to researching and compiling the original seven Pictorial guides. Following Wainwright's death in 1991, Michael Joseph bought the complete list including the later guidebooks and numerous sketchbooks. The rights have now been sold to Frances Lincoln, and the printing of the books has been moved to their original location in Kendal.
Wainwright's dry humour shines through - as well as his frustration at his own increasing limitations at the time - and his opening diagrams made me laugh out loud. Cumbria Life AW's originals and Chris Jesty's revisions will always have a place on my shelves as the definitive guides - to consult pre- and post-walk, and of course far, far too precious to take out of the fells. Cumbria For days when the weather puts the higher fells out of bounds or when you want a shorter half-day or evening walk, this guide provides a range of excellent options. In view of the large amendments in this revised edition needed to reflect changes that have taken place to routes in the past 38 years. I consider this to be a very useful acquisition for walkers.
