Whilst the concentration camps have replaced Dante's inferno at the twentieth century vision of hell, the Waffen-SS has succeeded in elevating itself to the martial hall of fame alongside Attila's hordes, Rome's legions, and Napoleon's Old Guard, and the word Gestapo is still synonymous with suppression. But little attention has been paid to the political branch of the SS - mainly part-time Allgemeine or General SS - and yet its 200,000 members were the grass roots of the SS, and its foundation. Without it there would have been no SS concentration camps, no Security Service (SD), and no Waffen-SS. However hard the Waffen-SS apologists argue to the contrary all these offshoots grew from the same SS tree.
