The ICE Manual of Project Management makes a major contribution towards the improvement of knowledge and skills in civil engineering project management through providing a central reference source for project managers working on civil engineering construction projects. Offering clear and accessible guidance on how practitioners can apply the key principles and standards in practice, the IICE Manual of Project Management provides a thorough introduction to the key processes involved in civil projects. It also discusses the range of skills and techniques that project managers working in a construction context will need to employ competently in order to plan and deliver projects successfully in accordance with prevailing international standards. The manual will also be available as an online repository of concise briefing papers and case studies.

The second edition of Earthworks: A Guide, is an invaluable reference tool for geotechnical and engineering geologist specialists and civil engineers working in earthworks. Nothing can be built without some excavation and transfer of soil (or rock) from one part of a site to another and this makes earthworks the most common product of civil engineering operations. Although normally seen as major structures, such as earth fill dams or large highways or railway embankments, the majority of earthworks are connected with minor civil works and building construction. This guide outlines the essential processes behind cutting and embankment stability, excavation and fill placement. Discussing the practical consequences of the choices made by engineers in these areas, the guide goes on to evaluate environmental, economic and life risk factors to provide essential information and practical advice those working in earthworks engineering today. This second edition delivers essential theoretical background to the compaction process and describes some commonly available fills, including industrial materials, both from the construction and the in-service viewpoints. The guide continues with a description of design, construction control and monitoring procedures for earth fills, noting the close links between them.
Paul Nowak is a chartered engineer and geologist, a member of the ICE, the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and a Validated Fellow of the Geological Society. Currently Chief Engineer at Atkins Geotechnical Engineering Division, his projects span highway, rail, airport, coastal and dock, building and tunnelling construction. His key experience lies particularly in design specification and supervision of ground investigations, slope stability and earthworks design. Paul Nowak has published several papers, and is a section editor on the ICE Manual of Geotechnical Engineering. Peter Gilbert is a chartered geologist and scientist, a member of the ICE and a Validated Fellow of the Geological Society. Currently Chief Geotechnical Engineer at Atkins Water & Environment Division, his main areas of interest span the fields of geotechnics and slope stability, as well as geotechnical engineering and foundation design.
