Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A longer and more complex story than earlier books about Dudley the dormouse. It appears in a larger format, but retains the qualities of the others. Here Dudley decides to enter the cake competition at the Shadyhanger Fair. Ever resourceful, he makes up for a shortage of carrots with an excess of baking power. The cake's rise is phenomenal, causing the oven to burst, and the result, iced with strawberry topping, wins first prize: a bicycle. Cross' illustrations successfully create a cozy, country world for this gentle animal-as-human fantasy using soft colors and lots of details that children will enjoy. His Dudley has an endearing personality and is often humorous. Story and pictures include clever visual and word plays. The book design reinforces the inviting tone of the story, incorporating text nicely into the overall design and varying size and arrangement of the pictures to fit the pace and events of the story. This is a light, frothy tale, but Cross and Taylor have given it enough charm and warmth to make it a winner. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
