Synopsis
What could be more embarrassing for an 11-year-old than watching his mother dance the Hokey Pokey in front of his entire class? Not much, according to Brendan Breen. Having recently moved from New York City to a small town in Pennsylvania, Brendan wants to fit in at his new school. The only obstacle is his mother. Loud and outgoing, Jean Breen is the opposite of her son. When Jean offers to emcee the Walter F. Harley Elementary School Music and Munchies Night, Brendan panics and plots to keep her as far away as possible. But one by one, his well-laid plans backfire. To avoid getting a reputation as an oddball, Brendan must steer a clear path through a dangerous landscape that includes not only his wacky mother but his chatty little sister, his curious classmates, and a giant orange-feathered baseball mascot called the Goofer. Clever narration, charming characters, and humorous black-and-white illustrations mark this novel of a boy’s desperate quest to avoid humiliation.

Gr. 3-5. Shy fifth-grader Brendan Breen doesn't make friends easily. He had some back in New York, but since his family moved to Pennsylvania, Brendan is "back to square one in the friends department." Brendan's mother is the opposite: outgoing, friendly, even boisterous. Her new part-time job as a disc jockey suits her perfectly. Brendan is embarrassed by his mother's behavior and avoids being seen in public with her. But now Brendan's school has hired her to be the D. J. for their upcoming all-school party. Visions of his mother making a spectacle of herself doing the chicken dance and the hokey pokey force him to dream up some crazy schemes to avoid being embarrassed in front of everyone. His amusing plots, along with a cast of fresh, believable characters, Jackie Urbanovic's humorous black-and-white drawings, and an interesting subplot (Brendan suspects that his teacher is the popular mascot for a minor league baseball team) will make this fast-paced, entertaining read a hit with middle-graders. Gr 3-5-An animated and lighthearted story. Brendan Breen and his family have moved to Pennsylvania from New York City. Now he has to make new friends, and his mother, DJ Jean Breen, doesn't understand that she embarrasses him with her wild job and rhyming name. If he can only keep her from hearing about the search for a DJ for his new school's Music and Munchies Night, he'll be able to keep his regular-guy image. That doesn't happen, though, and when mom's gig is a hit, Brendan learns that being different isn't all bad. His dilemma will strike a chord with many children. With Urbanovic's eye-catching pencil drawings and McDonough's firm grasp of the trials and tribulations of fifth graders, this story is well suited to most libraries.-Kate McLean, DeKalb County Public Library, Tucker, GA
