PreSchool-Grade 1 Although billed as a concept book to teach spatial relations, Mogwogs. . . doesn't work. The text does use the words up, down, over and through , but the illustrations do not reinforce them enough to teach the concepts. In every picture the Mogwogs look the same, whether marching (with straight legs), running, jumping, singing (with mouths closed), dancing or bouncingone leg is up and the other straight as if just getting ready to move, but not really starting yet. When they are supposedly moving, such as up a hill, the "hill" is a gentle slope, with almost unnoticeable elevation. When one Mogwog goes under a bridge, another Mogwog is on the bridge, which will confuse children. Better books teach these concepts, particularly the Maestros' Where Is My Friend? (Crown, 1976). The author-illustrator of Ravena; Eddie B, Pig Boy; and Fergus and Bridey presents another appealing picture book for tinies. It is an epic of nonsense, about a gaggle of gnomes whom Dunrea makes beguiling in their garishly bright, Middle-European costumes. They are the Mogwogs, 15 in all counting infants, toddlers and their elders. Off they go, marching on a route shown on a map preceding the first page. The individuals in the band keep up with each other, shouting as they go: "Climbing! Running! Jumping! Mogwogs on the March!" The text couldn't be simpler but it combines with the pictures to introduce, or reinforce, ideas of over and under (bridges), through (woods), up- and downhill, etc. The journey ends with all the Mogwogs falling asleep at home, on their own comfortable rock piles.
