From the front jacket flap: During the research for his book, The Occult, Colin Wilson became fascinated by the personalities as well as the powers of some of the people he interviewed. Despite initial scepticism, he has become increasingly aware of those vistas of reality that lie outside his everyday preoccupations. This has led him to take a far more tolerant attitude towards psychic assertations that do not fit necessarily into his immediate range of experience. The 'occult' has not yet qualified for recognition as a science, but the day when occultists and spirit valists had to plead to be taken seriously is now past. Colin Wilson discusses in Strange Powers three unusual personalities and the problems they suggest, treating them as a novelist rather than a psychic investigator. Robert Leftwich is a retired Sales Manager and a dowser who has given successful and convincing performances on television. Sometimes he feels an unusual awareness of mind that indicates his astral body is about to leave his physical body behind. Dr Arthur Guirdham believes that in a previous existence he belonged to a 13th Century religious sect called the Cathars or 'pure ones'. He is the author of several books, and his writings on reincarnation make claims as far reaching as those in Einstein's original paper on relativity. All three believe their powers to be perfectly normal. If this is so, are the rest of us abnormal? Or sub-normal?
