Synopsis
'Documents in Canadian Architecture' is the first book of its kind, a history of Canadian architecture through primary sources. Included are documents that address an impressive range of topics, from Native architecture and the Prairie town to architectural competitions and stylistic debates on such important movements as the Gothic Revival, Modernism, and Postmodernism.
The book features texts by the key figures who brought Modernism to Canada, such as John Lyle and Ernest Cormier, and texts by contemporary Canadian architects such as Arthur Erickson, Douglas Cardinal, Ron Thom, Eberhard Zeidler, and Melvin Charney. Several French Canadian documents have been specially translated for this volume.
By encompassing such a broad variety of viewpoints, 'Documents in Canadian Architecture' invites us to consider the role of architecture in Canadian society. Intended for the benfit both of the student and of the general reader, this anthology illuminates many debates that continue to be relevant to the architecture of today.
