Denny O'Neil was for years a group editor at DC Comics and the guiding force behind the Batman mythos during the '80s and '90s, helping to return the character to his roots as a dark and mysterious gothic avenger. He has also penned, amongst others, Amazing Spider-Man, Batman, Daredevil, The Hulk, Green Lantern and Superman. Curt Swan was the artist on Superman for over three decades, prior to his death in 1996, drawing the daily Superman comic as well as his longer-form comics adventures.
Blythe is a flight attendant with a terrible fear of heights and the hots for a mysterious man who seems to live in a nonexistent country. In a series of adventures that involve hijackers, Blythe’s practical and apparently somewhat supernaturally inclined landlady, her gay coworker and best buddy, and, of course, the mysterious love interest, Blythe gets into and out of a nation that disappeared from maps and access when India was partitioned 60 years ago. The full-color cartoon images include Blythe’s bruises when she deals with the bad guys and make an interesting riff on the Aztec plumed serpent legend. Yes, there is a whole lot going on here, but narrative drive keeps it all moving coherently, and it’s easy to have fun with the vagaries of the plot. Only the introduction of a far-future spaceship threatens to derail this confection, but by then the reader is fully immersed in happily suspending disbelief. --Francisca Goldsmith
