Update the story to modern-day Michigan, make the two characters a river guide and an older man whom the guide has hated for years, replace the film’s commentary about racism with some Native American mythology, and you’ll wind up with this involving novel. Joe McCartney is coerced by his wife, a nurse, to take an ailing patient, Frank Talbot, up the Escanaba River, hoping that, even though Joe hates Frank for what Frank did to Joe’s father many years ago, Joe will be able to get rid of the rage he keeps buried deep within himself. Trapped on the river by a forest fire, Joe and Frank must work around their antipathies and find a way to survive. They are watched by two spirits, Pauguck (who guides the souls of the dead to the afterlife) and Raven (who blinds the dead souls before their journey). There’s no happy ending to the story—Frank and Joe are both in darker places by the end—but readers will find Gubbins’ story surprising and real. An elegantly written and compelling novel that effectively mixes multiple genres. --David Pitt
