Here are the stories of those fascinatingly diverse women -- entrepreneurs, domestics, nuns, doctors, nurses, and journalists -- who played a critical role in the Klondike gold rush at the turn of the century.

When Frances Backhouse began her freelance writing career in 1984, she drew on her training as a biologist and experience as an interpretive naturalist to write about nature and the environment. Later she realized writing would also allow her to indulge her passion for history. In addition to articles about women Klondikers published in "The Beaver" and "Up Here," her magazine credits include "Canadian Gardneing," "Canadian Geographic," "Equinox," "Harrowsmith," and "Nature Canada," Frances lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
Eighteen-year-old Mabel Long had been married only six months when she and her husband—a man twenty years her senior who had been chosen for her by her parents—set off for the gold fields. What little affection she may have felt for Mr. Long completely vanished when their boat capsized on Lake Bennett and he watched helplessly while she floundered in the water. It was love at first sight, however, between Mabel and the man who did jump in and pull her to shore. The two soon managed to slip away from Mabel’s husband and head downriver. Mr. Long pursued them, but gave up the contest when he realized his young bride was determined to get a divorce and marry her rescuer.
