PreSchool-Grade 2 Whale Waddleby is a giant and a mean bully who grows bigger as he gets meaner. He makes life miserable for the people of Bottlesea. One day, he finds that everyone has moved out of town. Now he has only himself to bully. Much of the story is told through the pictures which portray a mean, disgusting glutton and show people's fear as well as his actions. One picture shows him crushing a baby while the residents try to rescue his victim. Picture layout and perspective are interestingly done, and there is often more than a touch of absurdity in the illustrations. The text is written in rhyme which is not very gracefully composed. Although some children may enjoy the story for Whale's disgusting appearance and personality, this unpleasant story leaves much to be desired.
