A sensitive, beautifully written book; recommended for New England collections.
When new visitors to our home ask what book I'd recommend as an introduction to the Island, I've always lent them Martha's Vineyard: An Elegy, by the late Everett S. Allen. It seemed to me the best place to start, for Allen knew old Martha's Vineyard from boyhood and in 1982 wrote beautifully and persuasively about the shifting pace, outlook and mood that has carried us forward to the present hour.
[Allen] recalls experiencing the seasons in terms of nature, tells memorable tales of the self-sufficiency and quiet capability of the sea-oriented Vineyarders, and concedes that many things-social, economic, cultural-were not better then. . . . Recognizing wistfully that the trends of the present are irreversible, Allen finds that island magic still exists and the prospects for the Vineyard's tomorrows are promising.
[Mr. Allen] has his own thoughts on the problem of summer people versus islanders, the 'extraordinary juxtaposition of lifestyles; if the differences between these once were greater, the abrasiveness was lessened because there was less contact. If the differences today are fewer, sheer weight of numbers and increased frequency of contact have introduced new elements into what is essentially an effort to balance a social equation. The effort may be more intense but it is not new.' He says as much in simpler terms when he writes of observing a work-stained butcher gaze at a beautiful and perfect summer person, concluding his longing look with: 'I am going home and kick my wife down the stairs.' Martha's Vineyard: An Elegy is a wry, old-fashioned book.
