About the Author

Sally grew up in Durham, New Hampshire, in a family of writers and sailors. She graduated from Northfield School and majored in publications at Simmons College in Boston.

Returning to Durham, Sally met and married Daniel Ford who had just published his first book, "Now Comes Theodora". Dan's experiences as a reporter in the early days of Vietnam was the basis for "Incident at Muc Wa", later made into the movie "Go Tell the Spartans" starring Burt Lancaster. His latest book is about Olga Greenlaw who was with the Flying Tigers in China in 1941-42.

Sally and Dan have done several books together including editing "Carter's Coast of New England", the classic sea story of Robert Carter's summer cruise in 1858.

Their daughter Kate Ford Laird is a freelance writer for sailing magazines and on sailing for the Wall Street Journal. She met her husband Hamish Laird while writing a story on sailing in Antarctica. Kate and Hamish are now building their own high latitude expedition yacht.

Sally's father, Philbrook Paine, also loved the sea and writing, as did her grandfather, Ralph D. Paine, who came to Durham in 1906, bought a farm, and wrote 42 books. Several are still in print including "The Old Merchant Marine" and "A Cadet of the Black Star Line".

The Fords live on Great Bay, where Sally still sails the 13 1/2 foot MerryMac she got when she was 13.
