About this Item
Collection of 40 playbills from the Academy Hall in Paris Hill, Maine. Dated between 1857-1900, with almost all items from the 19th century. Playbills are on a variety of color paper including orange, blue, purple, yellow, pink, white and tan. Playbills measure between 7" x 3 ¼" and 14"x 8" with most around 11" x 5". Overall very good. Playbills have moderate chipping and creasing, and light to moderate foxing. The Academy Hall in Paris Hill provided all sorts of entertainment including concerts, lectures, dances and plays. Paris Hill Academy was a school founded by the citizens of Paris, Maine in 1857. By the early 1860s it was home to the Paris Hill Thespian Club, and in the 1870s was taken over by the Unity Club (Oxford Hills Music and Performing Arts Association). This collection includes playbills for performances of the burlesque William Tell, With a Vengeance; Cinderella (billed as a "Fairy Extravaganza"); Sleeping Beauty; Our Mutual Friend; She Stoops to Conquer, and many others, often followed by cake and ice cream and a promenade with dancing. In all, an interesting and visually appealing record of American popular entertainment in the late nineteenth century. Seller Inventory # 019465
