'The famous poet, whose name has been so prominently cited in authentication of the 'black diaries', argues devistatingly for their spuriousness and makes it finally impossible for a government of any decency to refuse an independent enquiry.' Sir Roger Casement was accused of treason but a movement to grant him clemency was derailed when diaries documenting his homosexual activities came to light, and Casement was executed. Book Description Victor Gollancz, 1957. Hardcover / Hardback. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First edition. Hardback. Sir Roger Casement, an Irish Nationalist, was hanged at Pentonville Prison on August 3, 1916, for high treason. Under English law there was no doubt that he had incurred this charge - but in what circumstances? The conduct of the prosecution was in many respects discreditable to the great tradition of English justice. Too late, and after the execution, this was emphasised by editorials in 'The Times' and the 'Manchester Guardian'. Even in the heat of war petitions for a reprieve were begun. The signatories included men of unquestioned loyalty and great distinction in many walks of life, science, art, literature and religion. The purpose of this book, according to the author is not primarily biographical but a "cross-examination" in which the biographical facts are introduced as they bear upon the case and in which questions may sometimes be repeated from different angles in order to establish a truth. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. With 4 pieces of the original dw. loosely inserted. Lightly browned and foxed edges o/w Vg.
