About this Item

American Artillerist's Companion; or, Elements of Artillery; Treating of All Kinds of Firearms in Detail, and of the Formation, Object, and Service of the flying or Horse Artillery, Preceded by an Introductory Dissertation on Cannon. Volume II (While designated "vol.2", it should be noted that the topics covered constitute discrete, "stand-alone" information and concepts. The book is an independent treatise on its subject). By Louis De Tousard. Published by C. And A. Conrad and Co., 1809. First edition. 670 pages with an “Index and Artillery Vocabulary”. One folding chart. Also included is a list of subscriber's names beginning with Pres. Madison and Pres. Jefferson and running through the states (and the Mississippi Territory). On the ffep are the following, in pencil, “Wm. H. Bigelow” / “Portland Arsenal” / [in larger script] “Portland Me 1848”. *** “The American Artillerist’s Companion” was begun by Colonel de Tousard (a French artillerist under La Fayette) in 1795 at the specific request of President Washington. The work took a long time, and was not finally published until 1809, giving the Army its first manual in English on the fundamentals of artillery use. It was published in two volumes, with an additional volume containing 67 plates & notes for the other two. Tousard also wrote a proposal for a school for officers which became the blueprint for West Point. *** Early leather with gilt lines to spine and a maroon leather title label. A good copy (damp staining to preliminaries; tanning to paper; wear at outer portion of fold-out (at p. 394); foxing; a tight text in a sound binding). *** Some of the chapter topics are “Of Light Artillery”; “Manual Exercise of the field 4, 8, and 12 pounders and 6 inch howitzers”; “Of Mountain Artillery”; “Of the Different Modes of firing Cannon”; “Of Naval Gunnery”; “Of Casting Cannon”; “Of Gunpowder”; et al. Very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-13283462011
