Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Solidly bound in the assumed original polished calf binding which has been professionally replaced / rebacked / restored on the spine. The extremities are rubbed / worn edges. With 166 and around 80 pages of text that is full of illustrations. There is a variety of wear, including some water stained text. Not all of the text is affected though some certainly are. There should be two folding plates which are not present. There are dozens, perhaps 100's of illustrations. Rebound for the Kingston upon Hull Public Library Reference Section, with their bookplate on front pastedown. Boards and endpapers replaced. Frontispiece portrait of Thomas Gent. Title page. On reverse of title page a pasted-in extract from Psalm XVIII in Latin. iii to xvi is The Preface. 2 unnumbered pages of poem to Mr. William Fisher, gardener in chief to the Right Honourable John Aislabie, Esq; at Studley. Pages 1 - 165 Rippon. One page tribute to Gent for his book. Bound with: Pages 1 - 24, Prologue about the tragedy of Jane Shore. 1 page "History of the Great Eastern Window of York". Pages 1 - 73 "A Journey into some Parts of Yorkshire". 6 pages of ads., Carriers timetables, and subscribers. Plan of York remounted, with about one third loss. Most of York map still present. Folding plate of the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey present, and in very good and complete condition. Top part of folding advertisement(?) for Gent's Pious Contemplations folded and mounted in text. Previous owner's name on front paste down endpaper. A little toning internally, some page edges fragile else very good. One of the most eccentric and charming of English illustrated books and the earliest account of Ripon. Contains preface, a poem to William Fisher, a gardener at Studley, a description of Studley Park, a poem on the pleasures of a country life, a history of Rippon [Ripon], a Journey into Some Parts of Yorkshire, particularly Pontefract, Wakefield and Leeds; A Happy Reign, An Eclogue, etc. 8vo.
