1st Printing. 336 pages. Published in 1987. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of Jose Saramago's greatest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jose Saramago's "Memorial do Convento" in a felicitous English translation. His international breakthrough. He published his first novel, "Terra do Pecado" (literally, "Land of Sin", the novel has not been translated into English because Saramago never allowed it), in 1947, when he was 24 years old. He considered it a career-ending failure, did not write another novel for twenty years, and then took another stab at the form with "Manual of Painting And Calligraphy" (1977), yet another failure in Saramago's estimation, followed by "Raised From The Ground" (1980), much better in the exacting genius' view. With "Baltasar And Blimunda", the more suggestively romantic title given it by his translator that Saramago approved of, he finally found his true voice. Readers were rewarded with one masterpiece after another until his death in 2010. "If I may say so, it is a beautiful love story. But it was only at the end of the book that I realized I had written a love story without words of love. I have written a love story without a single amorous dialogue" (Jose Saramago). "Saramago will be a permanent part of the Western canon. In all of his wonderful meditations upon the ruefulness of life, there is always a spirit of laughter beckoning us in the art of somehow going on. His achievement is one of the enlargements of life" (Harold Bloom). "He got ahead of us; he is ahead of us. His work belongs to our future" (Ursula K. Le Guin). An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is, quite simply, the nicest copy we have ever seen. Please note: Most copies available online are remainder-marked, price-clipped, and have major flaws. A rare copy thus. Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0151105553. Bookseller Inventory #
