This marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of a classic of baseball fiction. William Brashler's novel is the story of a black barnstorming ball club in 1939, before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's unofficial color barrier. It was made into a popular film in 1976 that starred James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, and Richard Pryor. This edition includes a new preface by the author and an introduction by Peter Bjarkman that sets the novel in the context both of scholarly literature on the Negro Baseball Leagues and of sports fiction.

About the Author:

Brashler is also the author of The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings, as well as two other novels, City Dogs and Traders and The Don: The Life and Death of Sam Giancana. He lives and writes in Chicago.

Peter C. Bjarkman writes extensively about baseball, basketball, and travel-related topics. He has published two previous books on Cuban baseball, plus a history of baseball in Latin America and more than three dozen other titles treating Major League Baseball, NBA basketball, and NCAA basketball. His recent work includes team history encyclopedias on the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Celtics, and New York Knicks.
