About this Item

Light brown illustrated boards are in Good+ condition: light soiling is evident and the previous owner has neatly inked "Mailliard - Birds of Golden Gate Park 1930" on the spine. The pages are clean and unmarked except for the first owner's library bookplate affixed to the inside front cover and a dated gift inscruption on the ffep that reads: "rec'd Nov 25, 1930 / To Dr. Tracy I. Storer, /with the compliments of /Joseph Mailliard". Joseph Mailliard (1857-1945) was a New-Jersey-born ornithologist and nephew of Julia Ward Howe, author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Maillliard moved to California in early 1868. Mailliard was appointed Curator of the Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco in 1919, remaining at this position until he retired in 1927. Mailliard enjoyed an active retirement, publishing this book in 1930. Dr. Tracy Irwin Storer (1889-1973), to whom this book was gifted by Maillard, and whose bookplate is on the inside front cover, was was an American zoologist known for his contributions to the wildlife of California and the ecology of the Sierra Nevada. He was a professor of zoology at the University of California, Davis for over 30 years. A building on the U.C. Davis campus, Storer Hall, is named after him. Laid into the inside front cover of this copy is a postcard, dated Dec. 12, 1930, from Mailliard to Storer which indicates that the two men were friends. This book is still relevant and fascinating reading for birding enthusiasts in the San Francisco area, but the asssociation provenance between two of the prominent naturalists of their time makes this copy unique. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 000754
