G. P. Putnam's Sons, first American edition, hardcover book, 1965. A major biography of the great German statesman who not only shaped the policy of the German nation in the 19th century, but who also determined the destiny of Europe in World Wars I and II, and whose influence is felt up to the present day. The book concentrates on the man, on his complexes and neuroses, as well as on his political achievements and policies. Dr Richter sets out to show Bismarck not as legend would have him appear, but but as he really was - shrewd, intelligent, intuitive, neurotic, a born exploiter of other men's weaknesses, a man who could use public fears as a weapon and whose larger strategic concepts were mainly the deliberately fabricated invention of hindsight. The man stands out from the pages as a man of flesh and blood and not a monolithic figure of German patriotic mythology. Condition: Ex-library, cover has plastic library cover over it and "Tacoma Public Library" sticker on it. Hardcovers are good, sharp corners, but there is dry tape rssidue from scotch tape that held the cover on. Dry tape residue on first inside pages. Library card in back of book.
