About this title

Synopsis:

In this collection of self-portraits Arno Rafael Minkkinen incorporates his own nude body into a range of isolated settings, emphasizing its bond to the natural world. Whether rooted to the ground like an aspen or emerging from a smooth bank of snow, he contorts himself to merge with the contours of the landscape. An essay that explores his relationship to the camera as both photographer and subject discusses how photography can merge past and future, as well as individual bodies with the earth, sea, and even air.

From the Author:

The one question people always ask: "Why are you naked in all your pictures?" Naked hands, naked feet. That's not what they're concerned about. It's naked penises and naked rear ends that throw most people off the deep end. Of course, walking on water in a pair of wing tips would be great if selling waterproof soles was the reason for making the picture. But I want to depict something else: the timelessness of our bodies amidst the timelessness of nature. Through our nakedness we remain, like the rocks and trees, ageless in our skin. I hug the pine tree with the same power that the pine tree hugs me.
