About this Item

Edited by Norman Kent, with a Foreword by Thomas Craven. New York: Heritage Press, 1948. Tipped-in frontispiece photo portrait of Wilson by Phillipe Halsman. Quarto, hardcover, cloth-backed boards, in a dust wrapper. 108 pages, illustrated, with Bibliography. Includes a number of hand-stenciled color plates. The definitive work on this noted American book illustrator, and including a Bibliography of Major Works containing decorations by Edward Wilson. A very good to fine copy. First Edition. Few people know that this popular American book illustrator was actually born in Scotland and that he spent his early childhood in Rotterdam, before coming to Chicago in 1893. He studied at the Art Institute and also at Howard Pyle's school, before establishing his own studio, living and working in New York and Massachusetts. Well known to collectors of Limited Editions Club and Heritage Press books for his many illustrated classics, he also illustrated for many other publishers, produced stage designs, furniture designs, posters and advertising over an extremely prolific career. With seventeen titles to his credit, he was second only to Fritz Kredel in the number of commissions he received from George Macy of the Limited Editions Club. Bookseller Inventory # 6510
