About this Item

In 1941, the British government realised that, if ir were to take on the civil administration of the occupied Italian colonies in North Africa, it would need to bring in its own currency to keep the economy in those territories going. Although it would have preferred to use only the currencies already circulating in the countries concerned, it knew that stocks of these would be very limited as they were being destroyed by the retreating Axis armies. This led to the introduction of a seperate British Military Authority sterling currency for use in Tripolitania, as well as other occupied territories such as Madagascar, French North Africa, Italy, the Balkans and Greece. Compiled from original and contemporary sources, this book gives a definitive picture of BMA occupation currencies and the complexities surrounding their issue. 488pp illustrated in colour. Size: 230x170mm. Bookseller Inventory # 19408s105
