About this title

Synopsis:

The Brix Logging Story follows the lives and careers of four German-born brothers who arrived in the big timber country of the lower Columbia River in 1881 with little more than a restless desire to succeed in this new land. From the spruce-covered homestead of their youth, the Brix brothers - Asmus, Albert, Peter John, and Anton - bootstrapped their way to prominence in regional business circles with interests that spanned from forest products and maritime transportation to local politics. Rare photographs from the Brix family archives illustrate the story, together with images shared by historical museums and noted private collectors. Painstaking research was gathered about logging companies and their railroads, producing detailed maps drawn from USGS overlays, aerial imagery, period company maps and on-the-ground investigation. The Brix Logging Story is an insightful and unique contribution to the literature of Pacific Northwest forest history as well as a testament to the valiant entrepreneurs who helped shape this great region.

About the Author:

Peter Brix, grandson of one the Pacific Northwest s foremost logging entrepreneurs, along with current-day logger and notable author Bryan Penttila, have written at once an intimate, immigrant story as well as a cultural documentation of the by-gone days of logging. From oxen to steam donkey to rail, the superhuman task of, not only harvesting, but also transporting big timber to market is beautifully described and illustrated. Highly anticipated by lovers of logging and railroad history, the book features an introduction by Oregon s Historian Laureate Thomas Vaughan.

Personal and business historian, Beverly Warren-Leigh documents and preserves the stories of pioneering families. As archivist, preservationist, writer, and designer, her series of two volumes. The Brix Maritime Story and The Brix Logging Story, exemplifies historical presentation at its best.
