Book Description (Limited Editions Club) (1983) (New York), New York, 1983. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Bearden, Romare (illustrator). Limited Edition. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall, 231 pp., Signed by Author and Artist. Limited Edition of 2000, this no. 1234 and SIGNED by both Walcott and Bearden on the colophon page, accompanied by a separate original lithograph, this no. 269/275. Derek Walcott (b. 1930) was trained as a painter but as a young man turned to writing, having his first published poem in a newspaper at the age of 14. He became recognized as a major poet in 1962 and in 1992 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature; the Nobel committee spoke of his work as "a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment". Wonderfully paired with the colourful art of Romare Bearden (1911-1988), an African-American artist and writer who created eight original lithographs for this work, with 250 copies of each lithograph being produced (plus some additional); Bearden also designed the binding material for the book. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in cloth designed by Romare Bearden of the sea, hills and the bright Caribbean sun, cream endpapers, artwork by Bearden scattered throughout the text, Artist's Note by Bearden at the rear; large quarto size (just under 12" tall), pagination: (i)-xix, (1)-210, blank (211), colophon (212); type Monotype Bembo, limited edition of 2000 volumes, this being no. 1234. The separate lithograph is of hillsides and sky, in green, blue, yellows and gold, measures just under 12" tall by just over 9.25" wide. The slipcase is covered with very light lavendar laid paper, with silver lettering on the spine. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the slipcase is near fine with very light stray soil marks, the original lithograph is also fine. ***CITATION: LEC Bibliography 1929-1985 no. 533. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
