About this title
Synopis A child is conceived in a violent assault. The pregnant woman is confused and anxious to find a husband to help her through it. A series of events puts her in the path of a man she'd had casual sex with at a small get together. Once her luck had turned from bad to worse, she'd begun hustling as a way of making ends meet. Then, once prostitution had become too risky, she coaxed the casual one time sex partner into marriage, telling him that he was the father of the child. The child is born into a hostile situation but the father chooses to disregard the facial features and the color of the child's skin, which naturally looked like his true father, a Caucasian man. Throughout his infancy the child behaves in strange ways, like he's witness to things others can't see, something his mother's husband acknowledges, but has no clue as to the child's clairvoyance. As time wears on, there are more episodes where his clairvoyance reveals itself. In one episode, he's with his mother at the home of her lover. He begins to see images of blood on the floor and in his mother's hair. It's also at around this time when he begins to hear the voice of his spirit guide trying to communicate with him. Another child comes into the picture and the physical difference between him and his brother becomes an issue in both siblings? minds. The one born of both black parents begins to feel his superiority over the other, something that's revealed in a short, at first innocent, conversation between the two. It's only after a confrontation with a violent militant group and then running away from home to escape the hateful environment when his spirit guide at last begins to dominate his life, her image now fixed in his apartment and speaking to him constantly. The spirit reveals her reason for linking with him. Her desire is for the violent militants the clairvoyant had confronted to change their ways and walk the path of peace. ForFrom the Author:
This began as a project several years ago, well before 9/11, well before anyone ever heard of Barack Obama. So for many it may be touching on subjects they feel are best left alone. To many others it simply may not be keeping with the spirit of the time. At least for the time being. For many, we are now living in a post racial America, despite the daily messages offered by the Birthers and Tea Partiers in various parts of the country. This is a sort of dilemma that African-American writers have to deal with, at least those of us who choose to write in the social conscious tradition of writers who made the literary world take notice of our work. We are challenged by beliefs that say acknowledgement of our past is a step backward. For them, viewing society as "post racial" lends comfort. For them, that is what literature, or should I say a book, is supposed to do. And if it does make you think, it should be about something far removed from our immediate concerns, far removed from the roots of racism or the class wars that are our biggest barriers. This Child Will is not about an irresistible man's sexual escapades around the world and all the women who lust after his "throbbing manhood." It's not about the life of a gangster rap artist with a reputation on the mean streets he knew as a child. It's about aspects of the past circulating in the here and now. A journey where only the deepest meditation is liable to take you.
