Folio. LIII, [3], 495, [1]pp. Original half burgundy calf over decorative cloth. Book housed in its original decorative cardboard slipcase. Additional chromolithographed title. This book is the result of archaeological excavations undertaken in the 1920s in the region of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, by French archaeologist brothers Emilio and Duncan Wagner. The result of their prehispanic findings prompted them to think that the area was originally inhabitated by a very advanced civilization, and therefore proposed the existence of an ancient and fabulous Chaco-Santiagueña civilization. The brothers' interpretation of the region's unearthed material led them to publish this work which is still today the best illustrated and printed book in the Argentinean archaeological literature. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with no less than 699 in-text b/w illustrations and photographic reproductions, as well as 106 full-page b/w and color plates. Slipcase rubbed and partly taped along edges. Spine missing, but covers still attached. Very minor to moderate foxing throughout. Text in Spanish. Slipcase in overall good-, binding in poor to fair, interior in good+ to very good condition. Seller Inventory # 39978
