About this Item
6 loose sheets presumably taken from a 'Scrap Album' (? ) each with b/w lithographed images of ladies' hair styles, and each side with a full width sticker in b/w stating " Coiffures de Jean Stehr, Designer of Ornamental Hair Works, Specialist for Treatment and colouring of Hair. 235 Oxford Street, London, W." . The Images are pasted on to some large folio sized beige sheets which are very torn, and scruffy with losses around the edges. All sheets are 'dusty'/grubby but the images are complete and generally clean, some are a little wrinkled a few brown spots due to age, storage, and probably the old glue used. Sheet one has 2 sides with single figure busts of ladies and their hairstyles - with the lithographers names (L. Mallet? & Casimer? ) . Sheet 2 has 2 sides with 3 images on each showing ladies with front and side views of the style, and ladies showing the back view only. ( Lithographers = W and 'Westfield'). Sheet 3 has 2 sides with 3 images on each showing 3 ladies with back views ('how to do it') and ladies with front & side views of the style. ( Lithographers = L. Mallet and Westfield ). Sheet 4 has one side only, on which there are 13 images of ladies with various styles of putting the hair up, including combs and hair pieces. No Lithographer noted. Sheet 5 has 2 sides - one showing 15 images of ladies with various styles of putting the hair up, including hair pieces, etc. The second side has 7 ladies with heads of hair showing various styles. No Lithographer noted. Sheet 6 has 2 sides - one side with 11 images of various ladies with aspects of hair/styles (including what looks like a style for a well known lady (? Joan or Ina ? Hodges ? ) - the second side is damaged with one style cut out - leaving 5 views of ladies with various styles, front and back. No Lithographer noted. A Lovely set of Period hairstyles. There is a Jean Stehr archive group at the Archive of Art and Design in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Jean Stehr archive group (AAD.11-1983) consists of two albums of drawn illustrations of hairstyles featuring a variety of hats and ornaments. This London-based hairdressing company appears to have specialized in elaborate and fanciful coiffures exactly the sort of thing that, for a special occasion, might have been worn with the high fashion clothes in the Fashion Gallery at the V& A. The Lithographs I have for sale are Originals and of interest both as Images for colouring/framing and for researchers/students, hairdressers, TV/Film designers, etc, etc. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall.
