About this Item

This Limited Edition is the only printing of this book , limited to 350 copies . John Hay met Hannah Angell when he was a student at Brown University . She was the sister of James Angell who had recently joined the faculty of Brown . Brown was a small community -- only 235 students when Hay arrived . Hay relished Angell's classes and was soon visiting his home . It was love at first sight for both John and Hannah . After graduation from Brown , with no money and no real prospect of a way to support a wife other than writing poetry , John returned to Warsaw , Illinois and continued a series of letters to Hannah that he had begun just before leaving Brown . These letters continued during his " Executive Mansion " days with Abraham Lincoln . And even as late as 1871 , he urged her to " believe me to be faithfully yours " He wrote poetry to her and he boasted a bit about his role in Washington . Just before Hannah died -- she survived John by a number of years -- she handed her niece a bundle of letters and told her to use her judgment about them . The niece , Amy A. C. Montegue , had them privately printed by D. B. Updike at The Merrymount Press in Boston in an edition limited to 350 copies . This is a delightful , rare volume and would make a wonderful addition to the library of anyone interested in John Hay and Abraham Lincoln . This copy is in very good condition . There are no marks of any kind in the book. Bookseller Inventory # 010957
