LAVEY, Anton Szandor.

First edition, first printing, of this tongue-in-cheek self-help guide by the founder of the Church of Satan. Intended for a wider, non-satanic, audience, this collection of romantic advice gained LaVey and the Church significant publicity. It was republished by the Church as The Satanic Witch in 1989. As the guide differed significantly from LaVey's Satanic texts, "members of the Church of Satan were perplexed when confronted with a work clearly destined to 'outsiders', with little magic and very little Satanism. Instead, it offered practical advice, both psychological and sexual, which should allow women, 'the real witch', to capture the men that they liked" (Introvigne, p. 319). Lavey's The Satanic Bible (1969) is responsible for both the modern practice and cultural understanding of LaVeyan Satanism. Anton LaVey (1930-1997) performed the first Satanist wedding ceremony and Satanist baptism in 1967, gaining national notoriety and garnering celebrity followers in Los Angeles. These included Sammy Davis Jr., who unsuccessfully attempted to convert Christopher Lee to the religion in 1972, at the time they were recording a sitcom entitled Poor Devil. Massimo Introvigne, Satanism: A Social History, 2016. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in red and green, illustrated endpapers, top edge red. With dust jacket. Neat ownership stamp of one Antony August to half-title verso. Spine ends gently bumped, spotting to board edges, contents clean; unclipped jacket bright, gentle creasing to edges: a near-fine copy in like jacket. Seller Inventory # 169853
