About this Item
A very handsome copy bound in finely woven dark blue cloth stamped lightly in gilt along the spine, most of which is quite dull. Very clean and tight throughout. With dark blue topstaining. In a complete, striking pictorial dust jacket featuring the piratical Morgan and his men on the front panel. With some light nicking to the top and bottom of the spine ends and a tiny "v" chip at the top center edge of the front panel. Darkening to the spine. A solid copy of this reprint of Steinbeck's first book. "This is the first novel that John Steinbeck wrote, and it will be rediscovered by his readers with delight. It is a wild tale based on the life of the king of freebooters, Sir Henry Morgan. We follow him from the black Welsh glens, his birthplace, to the gold and blue Sea of the Caribs. We see him become the overlord of the scum of the sea--the blustering Brotherhood of the Tortuga, the cut-throats of Goaves, Portutugese--as vicious a crew as ever was gathered aboard ship." It centers on Morgan's assault and sacking of Panama City, the "Cup of Gold, ' and the women fairer than the sun reputed to be found there. Seller Inventory # 478
