About this title

In Sophocles’ tragedy Women of Trachis the main characters are the offspring of gods mating with common humans. The frailties of their human element are the cause of their doom in this contemporary story of revenge, jealousy, murder, suicide and euthanasia. Main players are: DEIANIRA, a woman of 38, ravaged by early menopause, depression and jealousy. HERACLES, her husband, early forties, a detective, head of Homicide. LICHAS, stillborn and unsightly, Deianira’s rejected pretender, thirsting for revenge. CHORUS, Deianira’s young niece, psychology student, too mature for her age. HYLLUS, pre-med student, Heracles and Deianira’s son. NURSE, long-time maid at Deianira’s house. GUARD, officer in blue guarding Deia’s house, enraged at being demoted from detective.
