About this Item
In 1830 France decided to occupy Algeria, then part of the Turkish empire. This action was to restore French dignity for a slight to its envoy some years earlier. At this time Turkish power in North Africa, and elswhere, was beginning to wane. The French action threw up an unlikely Arab hero, Abd el Kader, who for the next 15 years caused the French invaders more problems than could have been imagined, fighting and winning many notable battles against one of the most powerful armies of that time. When surrender became inevitable Abd el Kader was imprisoned by the victors for five years. When released he became a supporter and ally of the French. This study of an unlikely, chivalrous and respected hero also follows his interesting life following imprisonment until his death in 1883 aged 75. He outlived all but one of the French generals he fought against. 292 pages including bibliography, glossary index, 16 sepia art plates, e/paper maps.
