(c1860) Oblong, 24.5 x 17cm.[ Bound leather spine with green printed paper over boards, leather heavily chipped--split along hinges, top 1 inch and bottom 2 inches of spine leather chipped away, green paper rubbed and worn through at corners and edges, lacks free endpapers, light foxing. Front paste-down endpaper with pencil caricature of bust and a woman "trotting." away from a foot kicking her--entitled "reason enthroned." Rear paste-down endpaper with music of "The Sinner Invited" pasted to it. Collation: 1-248. Pagination: 384pp. Indexes. With music. George F. Root (1820-1895) music educator, composer. In 1850 he studied in Paris with two singing teacher and upon his return to America he established in 1853 the NY Normal Institute along with Wm. Bradbury. The principal teachers at the first session were Lowell Mason, Root, Bradbury, and Thomas Hastings. Fanny Crosby was one of his pupils. "Roots success in training teachers led him to follow Mason's example in holding `musical conventions,' gatherings of teachers in various parts of the country, who came from different towns in their districts to learn the latest methods of class instruction in singing. For many years this was one of Root's principal activities, and in many ways it was his most important contribution to the musical development of America."--Dictionary of American Biography: XVI:147.
