About this Item

There were quite a few prominent persons named Barber (sometimes spelled Barbur) in Windsor, Connecticut, the first English settlement in Connecticut founded in the early 17th century -- and this promissory note is signed by one and involves another. DS, 1p, 7¼" X 11", Windsor, CT, 1732 February 13. Very good. Moderately age toned and with a bit of foxing. Handsome, boldly penned colonial promissory note, which begins as follows: "Know all men by These Presents That I Joseph Barber of Windsor in County of Hartford and Colony of Connecticut am Holden and firmly Stand Bound and obliged unto John Barber of sd Windsor in full and Just Sum of Twenty-Pounds Current and Lawfull money of This Colony." Conditions for repayment of this loan follow, including "any Good marchantable Cyders, or Tobacco, or Beers at market Price." Signed boldly at the conclusion at lower right by Barber (as "Joseph Barbur"), and witnessed at lower left by a Windsor father and son: Thomas Marshall (1663-84), a deacon, and his son Daniel (1706-84), a Baptist reverend and itinerant preacher who ended up in Georgia, where he is considered the first great Baptist leader of that state. John Barber may have been the father of Joseph, but there were a number of Johns and Josephs at this time and the precise relationship is not clear. Some dockets on verso show payments received. A wonderful, attractive example. Bookseller Inventory # 38450
