[Edo 1863], n.p. Blue stitched wrs., worn covers, woodblock printed in color, 20 double leaves=[40] pages, 3p. text, 27p color illustrations of, 11.6 x 17.5 cm., lower corner a bit "thumbed," else contents fairly clean, solid copy. This is a natural history book, with lovely color woodblock illustrations of flowers, fruit trees, vegetables, birds, butterflies, frog, firefly, and other insects. Each page has several different examples each with a name in Japanese, identifying it. . CONTENTS: Each page is nicely composed, showing the influence of his famous teacher, Kuniyoshi. . The contents shows a very large variety of plants found throughout Japan, including pine, plum, cherry, pear fruit trees. Flowers are the majority of illustrated items, large numbers including orchid, mallow, peony, hydrangea, various flowering weeds, wisteria, rose, iris, thistle, pass flora, lotus, morning glory, wheat, rice, grape, loofa sponge, fern, bamboo and so many more we don t know the names for a approximately 2-3 per page, . *** FIRST AND ONLY EDITION: This is the FIRST & ONLY EDITION of this book. . *** WHO WAS THE ARTIST: YOSHIMORI: . The artist: YOSHIMORI [1830-1884], his actual name was Taguchi, originally Miko Sakuzo. He used the following "Go" [or studio names]: Ikkosai, Kosai, Kuniharu, Sakurabo & Yoshimori. He was an Ukiyo-e printmaker, and lived first in Edo, later in Yokohama. He was a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and specialized in Yokohama and Kacho [Bird & Flower] prints. He is collected by world Museums. *** TITLE: The title slip on the cover is missing as is most likely the title page. Nevertheless this is a pictorial botanical dictionary. *** CONDITION: The covers are well worn, and faded, with soiling, but solidly bound. At the top margin of page 4 there is a semi- circle cut out ca. 2.5 cm. in diameter, a few thumb marks on the upper corners, images by and large clean, just a bit dusty.
